The land

Origin of Line has deeply understood the need to protect the environment: the land they cultivate is not treated with chemical products and fertilization is completely natural, free of any synthetic substance. Origin uses exclusively natural fertilizers such as animal feces and urea, embracing the concept of organic and 360° sustainability, ensuring the plant good organic nourishment throughout its entire growth cycle.

Preparing the soil is a fundamental step, especially in response to climate change, which brings increasingly intense and out-of-season rains capable of damaging the plants and creating water stagnation. Every season the land is leveled anew to avoid this stagnation, which is particularly harmful to hemp in the early stages of germination and growth.

Finally, the preparation of the seedbed must be cared for in the smallest details to allow the plants to emerge from the soil easily, without encountering crusts or obstacles of any kind.

The plant

A culture of research, experimentation and functional use is at the heart of our approach to growing hemp, which today includes both a production side and a research side. From the different seed varieties to the sowing times, every choice is guided by the will to understand how climate change is affecting agriculture and to improve results year after year. The vegetative phase lasts about four months, at the end of which the plants are harvested and transformed through the processes of scutching, retting, carding and spinning.

The ecological potential of hemp is extraordinary, making it one of the most sustainable fibers available today and opening up concrete opportunities in fields such as agriculture, medicine, food, textiles and construction. During its vegetative cycle it absorbs considerable amounts of CO2, improves air quality, suppresses the growth of weeds and counters soil erosion. It also has the ability to clean soils of poisonous substances and heavy metals, requires little water, does not need large cultivable areas and does not contribute to deforestation. Finally, it is completely biodegradable and decomposes in about three months.

Origin of Line's textile research and development focuses on the transformation and refinement of hemp fibers and fabrics, with the goal of discovering unprecedented materials and production techniques, while preserving the original technical characteristics of this extraordinary fiber: thermoregulation, breathability, hygroscopicity and anti-microbial properties.

To obtain an excellent-quality yarn, an essential starting point for innovating in weaving and finishing, the hemp plants go through a series of sequential processes: from harvesting to retting, from breaking and scutching to swingling, up to softening, combing, drawing, pre-spinning and spinning.

The result is a high-level fiber, ready for the weaving phase and for all the subsequent refinement and transformation processes developed in-house by the product team.

Innovation and product

Origin's philosophy regarding the use of this fiber is functional to the purposes for which it is studied. Through the study of materials, which has research and maximum functionality as its foundation. The Origin for Canapa garments are born from a dialogue between experimentation and functional use. Each material is analyzed and transformed specifically to fulfill its greatest technical characteristics.

To define a project in which the function of the garment is not only aesthetic, Origin of Line finds its own language to arrive at a defined and distinctive product. The Origin for Canapa products are born from a perfect synthesis between the study of fabrics and their application, enhancing them further through our approach to garment dyeing, which defines the aesthetic and sensory aspect of the product.

Origin of Line, besides working with hemp, has begun an initial experimental phase dedicated to introducing linen and cotton fibers into its textile research.

The initial tests focus on the agricultural analysis of the soils, on the yield of the crops and on the quality of the fiber obtained in the first harvests. The goal is to understand the behavior of the raw materials in relation to the climate, the soil composition and the brand's production processes. Secondly, evaluations are underway on the quality of the fibers obtained, on their strength and on their response to garment dyeing.

This phase represents a new development in the material research of Origin of Line, always in continuous evolution.
