Franco is 85 years old, he lives on the Island of Giglio and every day he goes down to the harbor to watch the ferry arrive and depart. He worked on that ferry for 30 years, every day on the same stretch of sea.

Franco made his first voyage setting sail from Genoa, a month and a half to reach Buenos Aires. He was 16 years old; he tells of it as the most beautiful journey of his life, but the details remain a mystery.

He has sailed all the oceans, but the worst seas he ever hit were right at Giglio, because of the Scirocco wind, which makes the harbor practically inaccessible when it blows hard and puts any vessel at risk of capsizing.

More than once I was afraid of dying right there, beyond that breakwater!

He lived in Genoa with his wife, but since she passed away he has returned to the island and says he will never leave again, even though in every seaside town he still has some old shipmate who always waits for him and whom he would like to go visit.

Between one memory and another, always out at sea, he tells of having danced with famous actresses of the 1960s.

Whether it is the truth or an old tale of mermaids, no one knows, but as he tells it his eyes sparkle — those eyes as blue as the sea when the sun rises.
